Clanton Alabama – March 31, 2025 - The Shelby Area Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., (SAAC) established a gardening initiative for 2nd Grade students at Clanton Elementary School. Drawing on the name of the School’s Mascot, the “Tiger” and Tigger of Winnie the Pooh, Tigger’s Garden is an above-ground garden that provides hands-on gardening experience for the students.

The goal of Tigger’s Garden is to:

·       Provide opportunities for hands-on learning

·       Motivate students to eat and love fruits and vegetables

·       Promote physical activity and quality outdoor experiences

·       Supply local produce to students

Through this initiative, the young gardeners learn to predict, plan, observe, weed, water, measure, calculate and research.

To motivate the students to eat and love fruits and vegetables, they are served snacks employing the ABCs of Fruits and Vegetables.  Students are served snacks like “A” Apples, “B” Bananas and Pickled Beets, “C” Cucumbers and Cantaloupe, just to name a few.

Volunteers from SAAC meet at the school on the 1st and 3rd Wednesday of each month from 3pm to 5pm to work with the young gardeners who are enrolled in the school’s after-school program.  This year’s garden began in September 2024 and will run through May 2025 culminating 316 hours of volunteer services impacting an average of 24 students each visit.

Comprised of 167 members, the Shelby Area Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. is a Public Service organization that provides public services initiatives that benefit Shelby, Bibb, and Chilton counties.

Headquartered in Washington, D.C, Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. is the largest African American Women's organization in the world and has a membership of over 350,000 college-educated women.
